Angel of the Marshes is a prequel/short story from my Theodosian Women series featuring the origin story of one of my favorite characters from my novel Twilight Empress.

But his best historical novels, including his other masterpiece, Lincoln (which came out in 1984), perfectly capture the mix of high principle and low intrigue that makes politics such a compelling business. Schuyler, who prefers journalism to the law, writes an article about the wedding for a local newspaper–which gets rejected.

Vidal intersperses his colorful narrative with corrupt officials, political riots, a couple of murders and several affairs. A tiny flaw, but it annoyed me.

Please follow the directions. I've read this book three times, and getting ready to take it on vacation next week for the fourth. Beginnings tend to be messy, and the Revolution and Articles and Constitution seem messier and more ambiguous than one might have expected, based on high school history. Really enjoyed reading this book! Half of the book is about the ambitious young journalist, which I skimmed because it wasn't especially interesting. Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2016. Gore Vidal's "Burr" is everything an historical novel should be, and more. (Hamilton wasn’t as beloved in his own time). If half of what was presented was true, it severely tarnishes my impressions of our Founding Fathers. He ended up as Jefferson's Vice-President and, four years later, while still in office, he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel, which killed his own political career. I felt a little uneasy reading this historical novel about Aaron Burr as I knew so little about him it was difficult to know what was fact and what was “novel”. I had to read this riveting, stupendous book twice to fully appreciate the wealth of information on the life of the real Aaron Burr, not the villain that history and our schools have fed us all.

What I remembered of Aaron Burr before reading this novel: he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel, fled to “the west” (of the Alleghenies), and beat a treason rap. are timeless because they turn our conventional ideas upside down. Thanks to Vidal's Burr, I'm now wild about a topic that I snoozed through in high school: early American history. Vidal takes Burr's side to show that he was much better than that: a chancer, for sure, but self-aware enough to know that's what he was, which makes him intensely likable. 'Burr' is the lead novel in Gore Vidal's seven-book series on U.S. history. I've read most of Vidal's books; this is his best. Nothing new under the sun. What makes the book great is that the cynicism is mixed with a strong sense of ethical conviction: Vidal thinks politics is absurd but also profoundly important.
